As an absolute beginner, I couldn't tell you what makes a good welder; but I can tell you that compared to my son's flux-core welder, I'd would choose this hands-down! Sure, it throws some splatter but nothing like his flux-core does. And while they don't look professional, my welds using this thing are far prettier too - for the most part. My worst complaint, and from what I gather is common among all beginner stick welders, is that sometimes it's hard to throw a spark to begin the weld. Never-the-less, at this time, I'm loving this welder.
